Extension and Upgrade of Visually Impaired Resource Centre at Adidome Senior High School
The project seeks to build and furnish a Visually Impaired Resource Centre with an attached office to accommodate 20 students and 4 teachers at Adidome Senior High School. The resource centre will be an extension of an existing one room with an area of 18 square metres to a 56 square metres space with two accessible toilets attached. The new extension will incorporate accessibility features like tactile floor finishes, a ramp with railing to aid in the independent and safe movement of the visually impaired students. Pictures of the existing and proposed extensions are shown below.
Established in 1985, Adidome Senior High school is an inclusive school located in the Volta Region of Ghana. An inclusive school accommodates all children regardless of their physical, intellectual, social , emotional , linguistic or other conditions. Adidome SHS admitted its first visually impaired student in 2008. Since then over 35 visually impaired students have passed through this school and moved on to various tertiary institutions.
Currently the visually impaired student population, made up of 2nd and 3rd year students, is 21. The resource centre has 4 teachers who help in translating students assignments to braille and vice versa. The current one room resource centre can barely accommodate these 4 teachers, stationery and machines they use for their work let alone accommodate the students. Because of the inadequate space, visually impaired students are always seen sitting under trees and the small veranda in front of the resource centre.
Additionally, the resource Centre lacks the necessary computers and assistive devices required for visually impaired students to learn. This causes them to lag behind their classmates, who do not have this disability, but are expected to cover the same regular curriculum and write the same final exam.
The above situation causes students to be ill- prepared for their final exam and subsequently causes them not to qualify for their preferred tertiary courses, thereby robbing them of their basic right to education and choice.
An upgraded and well-furnished visually impaired resource centre will produce confident, well-educated visually impaired high school graduates ready to take on tertiary courses of their choice. This facility will not only equip them with the necessary computer skills for academic work but also prepare them for work and living an independent meaningful life in society.
Additionally, a well-resourced centre will provide endless access to textbooks to these students, since braille versions of textbooks and other books in general are limited.
Beyond the students, this facility will serve as a centre for visually impaired teachers in the district to upgrade their IT skills.
The success of this project will be a step towards GES and Ghana achieving SDG goal 4 which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The project is expected to help visually impaired students in Adidome High School get an accessible resource centre which is furnished with the needed computers and assistive devices to help them study and pass their final year exams just like any High School student.
Apart from serving as a place for them to learn and do their assignments it will also serve as a library for them. This will help broaden their horizon through the endless access to e-books and audio books.
